£7,500 towards an eligible air source or ground source heat pump; £2,500 for an air-to-air heat pump
Who qualifies
Owners of homes in England and Wales, including landlords, replacing fossil-fuel or electric heating with an eligible heat pump. There is no income test.
Where
England and Wales
Deadline
No closing date announced. The scheme has been extended to 2030.
How to apply
An MCS-certified installer applies for you and takes the grant off your quote. Apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme on GOV.UK (opens in a new tab)

Enhanced off-gas heat pump grant

Amount
Up to £9,000 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, instead of the standard grant
Who qualifies
Homes off the mains gas grid, as the scheme defines it, replacing oil or LPG heating. A capped gas meter still counts as mains gas.
Where
England and Wales
Deadline
For applications properly made from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027.
How to apply
The same as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme: your MCS-certified installer applies. What you can get, on GOV.UK (opens in a new tab)

Warm Homes: Local Grant

Amount
Average caps of £16,600 per home for energy upgrades and £16,600 for low-carbon heating, across a council project
Who qualifies
Lower-income households in England (means-tested benefits, a gross income of £36,000 or less, or an eligible postcode) in homes rated EPC D to G. Owner-occupied or privately rented.
Where
England only
Deadline
Delivery runs to 31 March 2028. The government says dates may change, and councils can run out of funding sooner.
How to apply
Check on GOV.UK. If you appear eligible and your council has funding, the council contacts you to arrange a survey. Check the Warm Homes: Local Grant on GOV.UK (opens in a new tab)

ECO4

Amount
No set amount. Energy suppliers fund the work they agree to, such as insulation or heating
Who qualifies

Where
England, Wales and Scotland
Deadline
ECO4 ends on 31 December 2026. Work has to be completed by then.
How to apply
There is no government application. The work is arranged through an energy supplier’s installer, or through your council for Flex. Ofgem’s ECO guidance for households (opens in a new tab)

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine different home energy grants?

Sometimes, but not automatically. Each scheme has its own rules about other public funding — for example, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is usually not available where public funding has already paid for low carbon heating at the same address. Check the rules of each scheme before assuming two can be used together.

Is there a grant for a new gas boiler?

Not through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme or the Warm Homes: Local Grant. ECO4 can fund heating upgrades for some qualifying households until 31 December 2026, but it is not guaranteed and the rules are strict.

Do I need to be on benefits to get a grant?

No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has no income test — it depends on the property, its heating and the technology. Income or benefits matter for the Warm Homes: Local Grant and ECO4.

Which schemes apply in Wales and Scotland?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales. ECO4 covers England, Wales and Scotland until the end of 2026. The Warm Homes: Local Grant is England only. Wales and Scotland also run their own national programmes, which we do not describe here.

Will anyone ask me to pay to secure a grant?

No legitimate government scheme requires a fee to “secure”, “reserve” or “release” a grant. If someone asks for one, treat it with caution and check the scheme’s official guidance.
