Is My Home Suitable for a Heat Pump?
What actually determines whether a heat pump will work well in a UK home — heat loss, radiators, hot water, outdoor space and the electrical supply.

Most UK homes can be heated by a heat pump. The real question is not whether it is possible, but what a particular property would need in order for the system to run efficiently and cost sensibly to run afterwards.
That question is settled by a heat loss survey, not by a rule of thumb. What follows is what the survey is actually looking at, so you know what to expect before anyone visits.
The short answer
A home is well suited to a heat pump when it can be kept warm by water that is cooler than a boiler would normally produce. Everything else — insulation, radiator sizes, pipework, cylinder space — is a means to that end.
A heat pump works most efficiently at lower flow temperatures. A gas boiler might run radiators at 70°C or more; a well-designed heat pump system commonly runs at 45°C or below. Getting the same warmth out of cooler water means either losing less heat from the building, or giving the heat more surface area to come off, or some combination of both.
What an installer is actually assessing
Heat loss
The starting point is a room-by-room heat loss calculation: how much heat the property loses at a design outdoor temperature, based on its construction, glazing, exposure and ventilation. This determines the size of the heat pump and the size of every emitter.
A whole-house estimate based on floor area is not the same thing and is not good enough. If someone quotes a heat pump without measuring the property, treat that as a warning sign rather than efficiency.
Radiators and underfloor heating
You do not need underfloor heating. That is the most persistent myth in this area.
What matters is emitter output at the lower flow temperature. A radiator that is comfortably sized for a boiler at 70°C may be undersized at 45°C, so some radiators are usually replaced with larger or higher-output versions. In many homes it is a handful of rooms rather than the whole house, and often the ones that were already slow to warm up.
Underfloor heating suits heat pumps very well because it has an enormous surface area and runs happily at low temperatures. It is an advantage, not a requirement.
Hot water
An air-to-water or ground source heat pump heats water for a cylinder rather than heating it instantly the way a combi boiler does. If the property currently has a combi and no cylinder, space needs to be found for one — an airing cupboard, a loft, or occasionally a purpose-built enclosure.
This is one of the more practical constraints in flats and small terraces, and it is worth thinking about early rather than at the quotation stage.
Insulation
Insulation helps, but “your house must be perfectly insulated first” is an oversimplification. Loft insulation and draught-proofing are cheap and almost always worth doing. Solid wall insulation is expensive and disruptive, and a good system design can often work around a solid-walled property by sizing the emitters accordingly.
The honest position is that insulation reduces the size of the heat pump you need and the amount of electricity it uses. It rarely decides whether a heat pump is possible at all.
Outdoor space and where the unit goes
An air source heat pump needs an outdoor unit with clear airflow around it, sensibly positioned relative to neighbours and windows. A ground source system needs either enough land for horizontal ground loops or access for a borehole rig — a much larger site consideration.
Noise is a common worry. Modern units are quiet, but position matters, and permitted development rules in England and Wales include conditions about siting. Your installer should tell you which route applies to your property rather than leaving you to guess.
The electrical supply
A heat pump runs on electricity, so the consumer unit, the incoming supply and sometimes the meter arrangement are all checked. Most homes need nothing unusual. Some need a consumer unit change, and a small number need the distribution network operator to be notified or involved.

Where grants come into it
Properties in England and Wales that are replacing fossil fuel or electric heating may be able to use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme towards the cost. The scheme is installer-led, so eligibility is confirmed by the installer who makes the application rather than decided in advance.

Signs a heat pump will suit your home particularly well
- You are off the gas grid and currently heating with oil or LPG.
- The property already has a hot water cylinder.
- Your radiators are generously sized, or you have underfloor heating.
- You are planning other work anyway — an extension, a rewire, new flooring.
- Your existing boiler is near the end of its life, so you are choosing a system rather than repairing one under pressure.
Signs it needs more planning
- There is nowhere obvious to put an outdoor unit within permitted siting rules.
- The property is a flat where the external wall is not yours to alter.
- There is no realistic space for a cylinder.
- The heating system is a mix of ages and materials with no records of what is where.
None of these rule a heat pump out. They mean the design work matters more, and that a survey is worth doing before you form an opinion either way.
What to do next
Get a heat loss survey from an installer certified under MCS, which is the requirement for any Boiler Upgrade Scheme installation. Ask to see the room-by-room calculation and the proposed flow temperature. A design that shows its working is the single best indicator of a system that will perform as promised.
